Bloody nipples: urban legend or dirty secret?

I find this topic disgusting yet intriguing. As B and I continue to increase our mileage, I have a growing concern for his comfort. Is the bloody nipple thing really true? From my searches online, it appears to be true, and I find this horrifying! Who wants to smear themselves with vasoline or body glide, or run with bandaids on their nerps?

OMG. When PJ first started running he had this problem. He came home one day and was in obvious pain. I asked him what was wrong and he lifted up his shirt. His nipples were raw, bloody little stubs. It was horrible!

He now either runs with band-aids over them, or buys form fitting racing shirts. It's the loose ones that produce the most friction. Any runners shop will sell them, or he can get under armour shirts from sport's authority.
